The Silver Star is a book penned by the author, Jeannette Walls. The plot of the story goes like this: in the year, 1970, 'Bean' Holladay was twelve and her sister, Liz, was barely fifteen years old. This was the time when their mother Charlotte, an artist by profession, runs away from home. Before leaving the house, she makes sure that her daughters have sufficient money to buy food for a couple of months.One day, when Bean returns home from her school, she sees a police car outside their home. Both she and Liz board a bus to go to Virginia, a place where their Uncle Tinsley lives. Their uncle is a widower and he lives in a decaying family mansion that belonged to the family for several generations.Bean is an ever-optimistic girl. She soon discovers who her father was and gets to know why their mother left them and went away from Virginia. The sisters do not have enough money with them and so, they start babysitting. Liz and Bean also start doing office work for a foreman in town whose name is Jerry Maddox. The foreman is a big man and often bullies the employees who work for him, his tenants and even his wife.Bean is full of adoration for her sister, Liz, who she thinks is smart. Liz is an avid reader of Edgar Allan Poe and also an inventor of word games. Their school soon begins in autumn. This changes the entire equation between the two sisters.
